Garcia Lorca

a.k.a. Federico Garcia Lorca

Author Code: SFGL

Born: Jun. 5, 1898 - Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, Spain

Died: Aug. 19, 1936 - Near Granada, Spain

Educated at the University of Granada, where he studied Philosophy and law, Lorca was more interested in the theatre, art and literature and eventually abandoned his legal studies. He transferred to the University of Madrid in 1919 and became associated with Generacion del 27, a group of artists and intellectuals which included Salvador Dali and Luis Bunuel. In 1920, he produced his first play, The Butterfly's Evil Spell, and the following year, his first book of poetry appeared. In 1928, The Gypsy Ballads was published and firmly established Lorca's reputation as Spain's premier poet. He moved to New York to study English at Columbia University in 1929. He also visited Cuba before returning to Spain in 1931 and establishing a touring theatrical company. In 1933, he published the first part of his intended Spanish trilogy, The Blood Wedding. The second part of the trilogy, Yerma appeared the following year. The trilogy remained unfinished at his death. As an intellectual, Lorca was considered dangerous by Franco and the Nationalists and, in the morning of August 19, 1936, Lorca and others were taken to a field and executed, their bodies thrown into an unmarked grave. His works were banned and even the mention of his name was outlawed. It wasn't until the early 1970's that his works were once again on Spain's bookshelves. Lorca became a martyr of the politically oppressed. His other works included Impressions and Landscapes (1918), Mariana Penada (1929), The Prodigious Cobbler's Wife (1930), The Audience (1930), The Love of Don Perlimplin with Belisa in Her Garden (1933), Lament for the Death of a Bullfighter (1935), Dona Rosita, the Spinster (1935), The House of Bernada Alba (1935) and Poet in New York (1940-Posthumous).
