Benson was the son of the Archbishop of Canterbury, E.W. Benson. His brother, Robert Hugh Benson became a minister and was an author in his own right. Benson was educated at Temple Grove School and Marlborough College. He then went on to King's College, Cambridge. His first published book was Sketches From Marlborough in 1892. Benson was the author of many biographies, reminiscences and fictional novels, probably the most well-known being the Mapp & Lucia sextet. He died of throat cancer. Among his many other works are Dodo (1893), Michael (1916), As We Were (1930) and his autobiography, Final Edition (1940). |
