In his early years, he worked as a copper miner, a movies art director, life insurance executive and a private detective, before turning to writing. He began to publish short stories in the detective genre from 1935. He also published some westerns. He published in pulps such as Black Mask, Argosy, Dime Detective, Clues Detective Stories, Cowboy Stories and ten Detective Aces. His first two novels, Sabotage and And Sudden Death appeared in 1940 and were the result of some previously published serials in some pulps. He has often been referred to as the missing link between Dashiell Hammett and James Elroy. He died from pneumonia at the early age of 54. His other works include Decoy (1941), Death Is Like That (1943), Murder All Over (1943) and Borderline Cases (1950 Posthumous).
