The son of novelist Sam Merwin Sr., Merwin was educated at Princeton University where he graduated with a BA in 1931. He then studied for a time at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts. He was then a reporter for two years with the Boston Evening America. He then joined the Philadelphia Inquirer as their New York City Bureau chief. He was married to Lee Anna Vance in 1934. His first science fiction story, The Scourge Below, appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories, in 1939. In addition to his writing, he held many editorial positions, notably with Startling Stories, Fantastic Story Quarterly, and Thrilling Wonder Stories. In 1951, he became a full-time writer, mainly in SF and mysteries. He also wrote a few comic book stories fro 1952 to 1953. He wrote some novels and a large quantity of stories. His work includes Physician, Heal Thyself (1940), No Greater Worlds (1945), Killer to Come (1953), The White Widows (1953), Three Faces of Time (1955), Snowstorms on Mars (1956), Planet for Plunder (1957), The Passer (1962), The Time Shifters (1971) and Chavinisto (1976). |
