Educated at the University of Vienna and then studied law at Pozony Bratislava;. After that he spent four years studying medicine before becoming a writer. In 1829, he received a legacy from his grandmother that allowed him to concentrate on poetry. He had already published some poetry in 1827. He moved to Stuttgart in 1831 and published Gedichte. In spite of some success, he suffered from a restless spirit and went to America in October 1832.He settled on a homestead in Ohio, also spending some time in New Harmony, Indiana. He was dissatisfied with America and grew to dislike Americans and returned to Germany in 1833. In the meantime, his poems had achieved a reasonable amount of success. He then lived in Stuttgart and Vienna. He produced some volumes that were well-received, but in 1844 he suffered from mental illness and was placed in an asylum under restraint for the rest of his life. His works include Faust (1836), Savonorda (1837), Neure Gedichte (1838), Die Albengenser (1842) and Don Juan (1860 Posthumous).
