Educated at Archmore Academy and the University of Delaware, Biden graduated in 1965 with a BA in political science. In 1966, he married Nellie Hunter and the couple had three children. In 1968, he received a juris doctor from Syracuse University College of Law and was admitted to the Delaware bar in 1969. He then practised law as a public defender and then at a local firm headed by a local Democrat, who named him to the Democratic Forum. Biden had been a Republican, but now re-registered as a Democrat. In 1970, he ran for the 4th District which he won and served a year.He then ran for the US Senate in 1972 and won unexpectantly. Later that year, his wife and one-year old daughter were killed in an auto accident. In 1975, he met his second wife, Jill Tracy Jacobs on a blind date and were married two years later. Biden continued to be re-elected for the next 30 plus years. He had an excellent liberal track record throughout.In 1988, Biden ran for President, but later withdrew due to some adverse publicity about his earlier career. In ran again in 2008, but withdrew later that year. Barack Obama offered him the vice-presidency which he accepted, and the pair won the election. They were elected for a second term in 2013. He was out of government from 2017 to 2021, serving as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Biden ran against Trump in the 2020 election and was successful in both the popular vote and the electoral. Nevertheless, Trump falsely accused the election to be fraudulent, in spite of being seven million votes behind. Key states, including those run by Republicans, rejected his claims and no proof was ever produced. In spite of this, Trump incited his followers and caused a riot at Congress. Biden was officially elected the 46th President and Kamala Harris as the first female vice-president. |
