Maurice Walsh

Author Code: IMWL

Born: Apr. 21, 1879 - Ballydonohue, Ireland

Died: Feb. 18, 1964 - Dublin, Ireland

Educated at St. Michael's College in Listowel. He took the Civil Service Examination and entered the Customs & Excise Service in 1901, spending 8 years in Scotland. From 1909 to 1913, he was based in Ireland. He sold his first story in 1908 to the Irish Emerald. In 1922, he transferred to the Excise service of the newly-formed Irish Free State and moved to Dublin. Walsh's first novel, The Key Above the Door was published in 1926 and moderately successful, selling over 250,000 copies. He retired from government service in 1933 and concentrated on writing. That same year he published The Quiet Man in the Saturday Evening Post. The story was made into a film with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in 1952. During the 1930s and 1940s, Walsh was one of Ireland's best selling authors, and yet his style fell out of fashion in the 1950s. His other works include While Rivers Run (1928), Small Dark Man (1929), The Road to Nowhere (1934), And No Quarter (1937), The Hell Is Mine (1940), The Spanish Lady (1943), Trouble in the Glen (1950), A Strange Woman's Daughter (1954) and The Smart Fellow (1964).
