Charles Haddon Chambers

Chambers had a high school education, but was not interested in proceeding further. He joined the Lands department at 15, but did not stay long. He then spent two years in the Outback as a boundary writer. He was invited by his cousins to go with them to Ulster and from there, he visited England. He returned to Australia and joined the managerial department of Montague-Turner opera company. He moved to England in 1882 and held a variety of jobs. Chambers wrote Letters From England which were published in the Bulletin. His first story was published in 1884, and he contributed further stories over the ensuing two years until his first play, One of Them was produced in 1886. Over the next twenty years, he produced many successful plays, the best of which was The Tyranny of Tears. His other works include The Open Gate (1887), Captain Swift (1888), The Idler (1890), John-O-Dreams (1894), Passers By (1911) and Saving Grace (1917).
