Giordano Bruno

Born: (?) 1548 - Nola, Italy

Died: Feb. 17, 1600 - Rome, Italy

Tutored privately at the Augustan monastery in Naples.He entered the Dominican order in 1565, taking the name of Giordano, and was ordained in 1572. He had views of the universe which were controversial at the time which extended the Copernican model. In 1593, he was tried for heresy by the Roman Inquisition on his denial of many of Catholicism's doctrines such as the Trinity and the virginity of Mary. The Inquisition found him guilty and he was burned at the stake in Rome in 1600. Bruno wrote on numerous subjects such as mathematics, Neoplatonism, the art of memory, etc. Following his death, he gained fame by the 19th and early 20th century commentators. He travelled extensively through Italy, France, Germany and England. His many works include The Shadow of Ideas (1582), The Art of Memory (1583), Concerning Cause, Principles and Unity (1584), The Triumphant Idiot (1586), Dream Interpretation (1586), The Pleasure of Dispute (1588), Of Bonds in General (1591) and Handbook of Metaphysical Terms (1595).
