Wilson Price Hunt

Born: Mar. 20, 1783 - Asbury, New Jersey, USA

Died: Apr. 13, 1842 - St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Hunt moved to St. Louis in 1804 and worked selling various goods for several years. In 1810, he became acquainted with John Jacob Astor and later became a partner in Astor's enterprise to gain a foothold in the fur trade of the Northwest. Hunt was then put in charge of an overland expedition. He successfully travelled up the Missouri River, then changed course overland to the Columbia River. Travelling for almost a year and over 2000 miles. He the sailed for the Russian establishment in Alaska in order to establish trade. He also travelled to China and collected goods to be sold in New York on his return in 1816. He returned to St. Louis in 1817 and acquired a large landholding on which he lived until his death. in 1822, he was appointed postmaster of St. Louis by President Monroe, a position he held until 1840. In 1836, he married Ann Lucas, the daughter of a prominent judge. His journal of the expedition was published in 1821 as Voyage of Mr. Hunt and His Companions From St. Louis to the Mouth of the Columbia by a new Route across the Rocky Mountains.
