Aluizio Azevedo

a.k.a. Aluizio Tancredo Goncalves de Azevedo

Born: apr. 14, 1857 - Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil

Died: Jan. 21, 1913 - La Plata, Argentina

He was the younger brother of the famous playwright Artur Azevedo. Because of his interest in art, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1876 to study at the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes. After graduation he was employed by various journals in drawing caricatures. He returned to Sao Luis in 1878 following the death of his father in order to care for his family. He then began to write and published his first novel, Uma Lagrima de Muhler, in 1880. He then proceeded to publish a number of novels from 1882 to 1895 when he became a diplomat and served as a minister in Spain, Japan, England, Italy and Argentina. His many works include O Mulato (1881), Pension House (1884), O Homem (1887), O Adulterio (1891), O Livre de uma Sogra (1895) and Devils (1895).
