William Stearns Davis

Born: Apr.30, 1877 - Amherst, Massachusetts, USA

Died: Feb. 15, 1930 - Exeter, New Hampshire, USA

The grandson of the president of Amherst College, he was born at the college. Educated at home, and then Worcester Academy and finally at Harvard, he received his PhD in 1905. He had begun to write historical fiction while still young, and his first novel, A Friend of Caesar, was published in 1900, the year he graduated with a BA. In 1904, he began to lecture at Radcliffe College and from 1906 to 1907, he taught at Beloit College. He joined Oberlin College in 1907 and finally joined the University of Minnesota. In 1927, he retired and moved to Exeter, New Hampshire with the intention of devoting his time to writing. Unfortunately, he contracted pneumonia after an operation and died at the age of 52. His works include God Wills It! (1901), Belshazzar (1902), A Victor of Salamis (1907), Outline History of the Roman Empire (1909), A Day in Old Athens (1914), The Beauty of the Purple (1924), A Day in Old Rome (1925), Gilman of Redford (1927) and The Whirlwind (1929).
