Hermann Eduard Von Holst

Born: Jun. 19, 1841 - Fellin, Russia

Died: Jan. 20, 1904 - Freiberg im Bresagau, Germany

Educated in history at the universities of Dorpat and Heidelberg, Holst received his PhD in 1865. He settled in St. Petersburg in 1866, but his return to Russia was forbidden because of a pamphlet he had written earlier. He emigrated to America in mid-1867 and settled in New York City, He taught modern languages at a small private school before becoming assistant to the editor of the Deutsche-Amerikanische Conversations Lexicon in 1869. He was soon a contributor to several American journals. He married Annie Isabelle Hatt and returned to Germany in 1872 to take up the position of professor at the University of Strasbourg. Two years later, he was given the chair of modern history at the University of Freiburg. He remained in this position until 1892 when he became head of the department of history at the University of Chicago. In 1900, he retired due to ill health and returned to Germany, where he died in 1904. His works include Constitutional and Political History of the United States (1873-1891), John C. Calhoun (1882), The Constitutional Law of the United States of America (1885), John Brown (1888), The French Revolution Tested By Mirabeau's Career (1894) and The Annexation of Hawaii (1898).
