Died: May 13, 1974 - Paradise, Pennsylvania, USA

Burks served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War I. In 1918, he married Blanch Fidelio Lane and the couple had four children. He began writing in 1920, contributing stories to pulp magazines. He was stationed in the Dominican Republic and became acquainted with voodoo. This inspired some of his later writings. He began to write supernatural stories for Weird Tales in 1924. He resigned from the Marine Corps in 1927 and became a full-time writer. He was tremendously prolific, producing some 800 stories and a number of novels. During World War II, he returned to active duty in the Marines and eventually retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel.During his long career, he wrote in many genres including aviation, sports, detective, adventure, science fiction and the supernatural. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1948 and continued to write until his death at 75. His many works include The Splendid Half Caste (1925), The Invading Horde (1927), River Into Wilderness (1930), Manape the Mighty (1931), The Mind Master (1932), The Great Amen (1938), The Far Detour (1942), The Great Mirror (1952), Sex the Divine Flame (1961), Black Medicine (1966) and Ex-Don: The Ageless Wisdom (1973).
