Educated at Charterhouse School and Brasenose College, Oxford, Vickers left without a degree. He then studied for a time at Middle Temple, but never practised law. He married Mary Van Rossen. He worked as a journalist, a court reporter and as a magazine editor. A prolific author Vickers produced over 60 novels and some 80 short stories, not to mention a large quantity of non-fiction articles. He was a regular contributor to Novel Magazine, Detective Story Magazine and other pulps of the time. He also used numerous pseudonyms during his career. He edited the 1960 Crime Writers Association's anthology of short stories. His work was also adapted for film and TV. His many works include The Woman Without a Soul (1920), The Man in the Shadow (1924), His Other Wife (1926), The Gold Game (1930), Money Buys Everything (1934), The Enemy Within (1938), War Bride (1941), Murder of a Snob (1949), Double Image (1955) and The Girl Who Wouldn't Talk (1960).
