Carroll John Daly

Author Code: ACJD

Born: Sep. 14, 1889 - Yonkers, New York, USA

Died: Jan. 16, 1958 - Los Angeles, California, USA

A mild-mannered man, Daly was an usher, projectionist and owner of a movie-theater in Atlantic City, before taking up writing. In December 1922, Daly published the first of many detective works in The False Button Combs. A rival of Dashiell Hammett, he beat him to the punch by three months. Daly would go on to an enormously prolific career. He introduced the character of Race Williams, a private eye that would go on to appear in over 70 stories and 8 novels. As popular as he was, his work became less-refined than others in the genre and by the 1940s, began to decline. He continued to write into the 1950s, bust mostly for second- and third-rate pulp titles. All in all, Daly was a highly influential writer in his time and it is said that Mickey Spillane modelled his detective Mike Hammer after Daly's Race Williams. His works include The White Circle (1926), The Snarl of the Beast (1927), The Hidden Hand (1929), The Tag Murder (1930), City of Blood (1936), Hell With the Lid Lifted (1939), Not My Corpse (1948), Murder At Our House (1950) and Ready to Burn (1951).
