During his early years, he was an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy. He initially worked as a printing machine salesman. Tubb became a full-time writer after his first work was published in New Worlds in 1951. He was an active contributor to the leading SF pulp magazines during the 1950s and even edited Authentic Science Fiction from 1956 to 1957. During the 1950s , he won the Nebula Science Fiction Magazine Literary Award five times in the period 1953 to 1958. The work for which he is best known is the Demarest Saga, which consisted of 33 novels and spanned more than 40 years. Tubb also wrote 11 western novels, a detective novel and a foreign legion novel. In all, Tubb used over 50 pseudonyms. His many works include Saturn Patrol (1951), Argentis (1952), Reverse Universe (1952), The Wall (1953), Journey to Mars (1954), The Winds of Gath (1967), Lallia (1971), Eloise (1975), The Terra Data (1980), Earth Is Heaven (1982), The Temple of Truth (1985), The Sleeping City (1999), Footsteps of Angels (2004) and Child of Earth (2005).
