Johann Gabriel Seidel

Died: Jul. 18, 1875 - Vienna, Austria

Educated at the Academic High School in Vienna, Seidel then studied law at the University in Vienna. In 1829, he became a high school professor in Cilli, Lower Styria. In 1840, he became the curator of the Munz- und Antikenkabinett in Vienna. From 1856 to 1871 he was in charge of the Treasury. Seidel began producing poetry from his twenties and many of his poems were set to music bu Schubert and Lowe. From 1828 to 1838, he produced four volumes of 'Flinserlinn', long dialect poems. He was also responsible for producing the lyrics of the national anthem of the Austrian Empire, which was in use in the Habsburg Empire from 1853 until 1918. His other works include Ballads, Romances, Sagas and Songs (1826), Narratives (1828), Bifolien (1836), Lower Styrian Switzerland (1836), Liedertafel (1840), Hikes Through Tyrol and Styria (1840) and Nature and Heart (1853).
