Harley Granville-Barker

He left school when he was 14, and embarked on a career as an actor. After a very successful career, he left acting in 1911 to focus on directing. He had already established himself as a director when, from 1904 to 1907, he was considered to be one of the major reformers of the English stage. During the 1910s Granville-Barker's career boomed as he gave three famous productions of Shakespeare at the Savoy Theatre. He turned his hand to playwrighting a produced a masterpiece in The Voysey Inheritance. He settled in Paris following the First World War. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he fled France for Spain and later returned to the U.S. He lectured at Harvard and worked for the British Information Services. He returned to Paris following the war, where he died. Among his many works are The Marrying of Anne Leate (1902), Prunella (1906), Waste (1907), The Madras House (1910), Prefaces to Shakespeare (1927-1945), The Secret Life (1923) and His Majesty (1928).
