Lucian

a.k.a. Lucian of Samosata

Born: c. 125 A.D. - Samosata, Syria

Died: c. 192 A.D. - (?) Egypt

Originally an apprentice to his uncle to become a sculptor, he left to get an education in Ionia. He became a travelling lecturer, visiting various universities throughout the Roman Empire. The details of his life come to us mainly from his own writing, which was mostly satirical. He often ridiculed religion, superstition and the paranormal. His works were hugely popular at the time and over eighty works have survived. He is credited with having written the world's first science fiction in Trips to the Moon. In his later life, he was appointed to a minor post in the Roman bureaucracy in Egypt. His other many works include The Vision, The Literary Prometheus, The Way to Write History, Dialogues of the Gods, Demonax, Imagines, True History, Dialogues of the Dead, Menippus, Charon, The Voyage to the Underworld, The Dream, The Sale of Lives, The Cross-examination of Zeus, Meeting of the Gods, Dependent Scholars and Peregrine.
