Author Code: GPKR

Born: Jul. 31, 1843 - Krieglach, Austria

Died: Jun. 26, 1918 - Krieglach, Austria

Brought up in the mountains of Styria, Rosegger's education was limited due to his remoteness to schools. He received around a year's tutoring before becoming an apprentice to a travelling tailor. He was awarded a grant to travel in Europe, which he did for three years. He married in 1873, but his wife died giving birth to their second child. In 1876, he founded the magazine Heimgarten and became its editor until 1910. A prolific author, he wrote several novels and numerous short stories, not to mention his poetry. In 1903, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Heidelberg, and was also so honoured by the universities in Graz and Vienna, He also received numerous royal medals.
