Born: Jun. 3, 1899 - Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Died: Apr. 27, 1964 - Hollywood Los Angeles, California, USA

Educated st Stetson University, but was interrupted when the First World War broke out. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1918 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. Following the war, he attended the University of Chicago and graduated in 1922 with a BA in philosophy. He then joined the Illinois National Guard and was promoted to First Lieutenant Field Artillery in 1923. He turned his hand to writing and published his first book, Painted Ponies, in 1927. He is best remembered for his two Western novels, The Searchers (1954) and The Unforgiven (1957), both of which became highly successful films.He produced numerous screenplays, short stories and a few novels. He also directed the Western file, High Lonesome in 1950.His other works include Pelican Coast (1929), One of Us Is a Murderer (1930), Winter Range (1932), Cattle Kingdom (1933), Thunder In the Dust (1934), The Smoky Years (1935), Empire For a Lady (1937), Useless Cowboy (1944) and By Dim and Flaring Lamps (1962).
