Johannes V. Jensen

Educated at the University of Copenhagen in medicine, Jensen spent much of his free time as a writer in order to fund his studies. He changed to literature as a career after 3 years of study. In 1896 he published Danskere and followed in 1898 with his Himmerland Stories, which comprised a series of tales set in his birth area of Denmark. From 1900 to 1901 he wrote Kongens Fald (The Fall of the King) his first masterpiece.Perhaps his best-known work is Den Lange Rejse (1908-1922), translated into English as The Long Journey (1923-24). Jensen travelled to America and was greatly influenced by Walt Whitman. Today, he is considered the father of Danish modernism. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944. He also wrote a deal of poetry. He spent many years as an independent journalist. In 1999, two primary Danish newspapers named The Fall of the King as the best Danish novel of the 20th century. His other works include Intermezzo (1899), Skovene (1904), Digte (1906), Myter (1912), Olivia Marianne (1915), Sangerinden( 1921), Hamlet (1924), Ved Livets Bred (1928), Pisangen (1932), Gudrun (1936), Gutenberg (1939), Mindets Tavle (1941), Afrika (1949) and Tilblivelsen (1951 Posthumous).
