Carl Spitteler

a.k.a. Carl Friedrich Georg Spitteler, Carl Felix Tandem *

Author Code: GCFS

Born: Apr. 24, 1845 - Liestal, Switzerland

Died: Dec. 29, 1924 - Lucerne, Swizerland

Educated at the Gymnasium in Basel and the University of Zurich where he studied law. From 1865 to 1870 he studied theology at Zurich, Basel and Heidelberg. Nevertheless, he decided against the church in favor of literature and became a poet. He worked as a tutor in Russia in 1871 and continued there until 1879. He was also an elementary teacher in Bern and La Neuveville. In 1881, he published his prose poem, Prometheus and Epimetheus, which was well-received. In 1885, he gave up teaching and devoted his career to journalism. His most famous work, Olympische Fruhling (Olympic Spring) was published in 1905; a work which would be instrumental in him being awarded the Nobel Prize in 1919. His other works include Extramundana (1883), Butterflies (1889), Literary Parables (1892), Balladen (1896), Conrad der Leutnant (1898), Imago (1906), Grass and Bell Songs (1906), Two Little Misogynists (1907), My Earliest Experiences (1914) and Prometheus and Suffering (1924).
