Died: Feb. 25, 1965 - Midhurst, Sussex, England

Wright's formal education ended when he was eleven. Nevertheless he self-educated and studied literature extensively. Wright worked as an accountant from 1895. In 1917, Wright helped to found the Empire Poetry League and edited the League's journal, Poetry for many years. Wright's translations of Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio were published in Poetry. In the 1920s, Wright began to write science fiction and his first novel, The Amphibians was published in 1924. In 1928, he published Deluge, which was a great success and resulted in a Hollywood film. Wright visited Nazi Germany in 1934, in order to write some articles, but shocked by what he encountered, wrote three novels about a future European war. Write also wrote screenplays, poetry and mystery fiction His output declined in the late 1940s. His works include The Island of Captain Sparrow (1928), Dawn (1929), The World Below (1929), Elfwin (1930), The Bell Street Murders (1931), Prelude in Prague: The War of 1938 (1934), The Adventure of Wyndham Smith (1938), The Rissole Mystery (1941), Dinner in New York (1943) and Spider's War (1954).
