Died: Jan. 7, 1929 - Hampstead, London, England

Educated at Grace's Classical and Commercial Academy until he was 13. He was interested in literary pursuits from an early age. His first play, It's Only Round the Corner appeared at the Exeter Theatre in 1878. In 1882, his play, The Silver King, was a resounding success. He had a successful career as a playwright, including on Broadway. In his later life he produced a number of non-fiction essays on subjects as broad as Communism and the works of Wells and Shaw. He also lectured widely about the function of the theatre. His many works include Elopement (1879), Cherry Ripe (1881), Saints and Sinners (1884), Hard Hit (1887), The Deacon (1890), The Renaissance of the English Drama 1883-94 (1895), The Rogue's Comedy (1896), Miss Dane's Defence (1900), The Chevalier (1904), Dolly Reforming Herself (1910) and The Lie (1915).
