Born: Jan. 29, 1829 - London, England

Died: Apr. 27, 1912 - Richmond, Surrey, England

Educated at King's College, London and Lincoln College, Oxford, Church then took holy orders and worked as assistant master at Merchant Taylor's School. In 1870, he became headmaster of the Royal Grammar School in Henley-on-Thames. In 1873, he became headmaster of King Edward VI School in Retford.Then, in 1880, he became professor of Latin at University College, London. He translated many Latin works and also produced a great number of classical tales for young people. He also produced both Latin and English verse. His works include Stories From the Greek Tragedians (1880), The Story of the Persian War (1881), Roman Life in the Days of Cicero (1883), Stories From Livy (1883), The Count of the Saxon Shore (1887), The Hammer (1890), Callias (1891), The Burning of Rome (1891), The Story of the Odyssey (1892), The Story of the Iliad (1895), Lords of the World (1897) and Memories of Men and Books (1908).
