Sabatino Lopez

Born: Dec. 10, 1867 - Livorno, Italy

Died: Oct. 27, 1951 - Milan, Italy

He taught for a time at the Brera Academy. He married in 1909 and is the father of Robert Sabatino Lopez, the famed historian. He worked as a theatre critic near Genoa and was a friend of Giuseppe Verga. In 1911, he was invited by the Council of the Italian Society of Authors to become their director in Milan. In 1912, the Humanitarian Society made him responsible for the drama section of the People's Theatre; a position he held until the rise of Fascism. During the Second World War he fled to Switzerland to escape persecution because of his Jewish background. In 1949, he published I Was Born Again, his autobiography. He produced some 50 plays during his long career. These works include That Moral That Runs (1904), The Good Daughter (1909), Ninetta (1914), Mario and Maria (1915), The Last Gypsies (1919), The Sparrow (1920), Ms. Rosa (1928), Smiles and Sighs (1936) and Points of View (1952 Posthumous).
