Educated at home until the eighth grade, then at St. John's Beaumont, a Jesuit school in England. He then attended the Millbrook School, where he graduated in 1943. That year, he attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the the US Army Officer Candidate School where he was commissioned a second lieutenant, although he never saw action. He was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia for the remainder of the war. After the war, he attended Yale University where he graduated with honors in 1950. While at Yale, he was the chairman of the Yale Daily News, a member of the Conservative Party of the Yale Political Union, and was an accomplished debater. In 1951, he joined the CIA and was assigned to Mexico City, where he worked under E. Howard Hunt, he of later Watergate fame. In 1951, he published God and Man at Yale, a highly criticized work. During the McCarthy era, Buckley was a staunch supporter. In 1955, he found the National Review, devoted to conservative commentary. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Buckley was the standard bearer of ultra-conservatism. The, during the Johnson administration, he warmed to civil rights and even debated against George Wallace. He supported Goldwater in the 1964 election. In 1965, Buckley ran for mayor of New York City, but lost to John Lindsay. From 1966 to 1999, Buckley hosted the TV show, Firing Line During the late 1960s, Buckley was perhaps best-known for the TV debates with Gore Vidal, whom he detested, and the feud continued for many years. In 1973, he served as a UN delegate under Nixon. In 1991, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died from a heart attack while at home in his study. His many works include Up From Liberalism 1961), Dialogues on Americanism (1964), The Jeweler's Eye (1968), Inveighing We Will Go (1972), Right Reason (1985), Nearer My God (1997), Miles Gone (2004) and Cancel Your Own Goddam Subscription (2007).
