William Browne

Born: (?) 1590 - Tavistock, Devon, England

Died: (?) 1645 - Dorking, Surrey, England

Educated at Exeter College, Oxford in law and subsequently entered the Inner Temple in 1611. He lived in France between 1616 and 1621. He became tutor to Robert Dormer, the future Earl of Carnovan in 1624. The bulk of Browne's poetry was composed in youth and early manhood. His favourite poets were Philip Sydney and Edmund Spenser. He himself was a great influence on John Milton and John Keats. Browne was not only a poet, but an antiquary and a scholar. The third volume of Britannia's Pastorals was not published until 1852. His works include The Shepherd's Pipe (1616) and Britannia's Pastorals (1613-1616).
