Alec Waugh

a.k.a. Alexander Raban Waugh

Author Code: EAWA

Born: Jul. 8, 1898 - London, England

Died: Sep. 3, 1981 - Tampa, Florida, USA

Alec was the older brother of the more successful Evelyn Waugh and son of the author and critic Arthur Waugh. He was educated at Sherbourne School in Dorset, from which he was expelled, and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. He was only 17 when he wrote The Loom of Youth, a novel about public school that created a considerable stir. He served in France during World War I and spent time as a prisoner of war. Following the war, he worked as a publisher's reader until 1926, when he went to Tahiti. He married the wealthy Joan Turnside, which allowed him to live much of his life overseas. His 1955 novel, Islands In the Sun, was a best-seller and was made into a highly successful film. His other works include Resentment Poems (1918), The Prisoner of Mainz (1919), The Lonely Unicorn 1922), Card Castle (1924), Nor Many Waters (1928), The Coloured Countries (1930), Jill Somerset (1936), Unclouded Summer (1948), Guy Renton (1952), Fuel For the Flames (1960), Mule on the Minaret (1965), A Spy In the Family (1970), A Fatal Gift (19730 and Married to a Spy (1976).
