Louis Golding

Author Code: ELGD

Born: Nov. 19, 1895 - Manchester, England

Died: Aug. 9, 1958 - London, England

Educated at Manchester Grammar School and Queen's College, Oxford, Golding published his first novel while he was still an undergraduate. He served in World War I and this interrupted his studies. His first novel, Forward From Babylon, was published in 1920. Much of his work reflects his Manchester and Jewish background. In 1932, he published Magnolia Street, based on the Hightown area of Manchester of the 1920s. The book became a best-seller and was made into a play in 1934, and also filmed as Magnolia Street Story. Golding was versatile and in addition to his novels, wrote poetry, short stories, travel books and fantasies. His many works include Sorrow of War (1919), Shepherd Singing Ragtime and Other Poems (1921), Sunward (1924), The Miracle Boy (1927), James Joyce (1933), The Doomington Wanderer (1934), The Pursuer (1936), The Jewish Problem (1938), Hitler Through the Ages (1939), The World I Knew (1940), No News From Helen (1945), Honey For the Ghost (1949), The Loving Brothers (1953) and The Little Old Admiral (1958).
