Juliana Horatio Ewing

a.k.a. Juliana Horation (nee) Gatty Ewing, JHG *

Author Code: EJHE

Born: Aug. 3, 1841 - Ecclesfield, England

Died: May 13, 1885 - Bath, England

Educated primarily at home, Ewing was interested in writing from an early age and contributed stories to Charlotte Yonge's magazine, The Monthly Packet. She married Major Alexander Ewing in 186 and they spent two years in Canada. Thereafter, they spent eight years in the army town of Aldershot. Ewing suffered from ill health and was unable to follow her husband's overseas postings. The couple moved to Trull in Somserset in 1883, but moved again to Bath, hoping that the climate there would do her good. Nevertheless, her health deteriorated and, after two operations, she died. She received a military funeral. She has been widely praised for her work, which contains some outstanding child novels. She was also an editor for numerous children's magazines. Her many works include Mrs Overtheway's Remembrances (1869), A Flat Iron for a Farthing (1873), Lob Lie-By-the-Fire (1874), Six to Sixteen (1875), Jan of the Windmill (1876), A Great Emergency and Other Tales (1877), Old-Fashioned Fairy Tales (1882), The Story of a Short Life (1885) and the posthumous published The Peace Egg and a Christmas Morning Play (1887) and Verses For Children (1888).
