Adolf Jensen

Author Code: GADJ

Born: Jan. 12, 1837 - Koningsberg, Prussia

Died: Jan. 23, 1879 - Baden-Baden, Germany

Born of a family of musicians, Jensen was largely self-taught, however he did study under Ehlert, Kohler and Marpurg. In 1856, he travelled to Russia in the hopes of teaching there, in order to earn enough to study with Robert Schumann. Unfortunately, Schumann died in 1857. Later that year, he became the music director of Posen City Theatre. From 1858 to 1860 he lived in Copenhagen where he met and became friends with Neils Gade. Returning to Koningsberg in 1860, he composed some of his best music over the next ten years. He was responsible for over 160 songs and choral pieces, a sonata, etudes, and a concert overture. Seriously ill, he sought out places where he could recover, and lived in Dresden, Graz, and finally, in Baden-Baden where he died of tuberculosis at the age of 42.
