The son of a schoolmaster, Beachcroft was educated at Balliol College, Oxford and moved to London after graduating. There, he took a job as a copywriter for an advertising agency. He began by writing poetry, but soon changed to short stories. His first collection, A Young Man In a Hurry and Other Stories, was published in 1934 and was very popular. His second collection, and even more critically acclaimed, appeared in 1936. His first novel, The Man Who Started Clean, was published in 1937, but did not receive the accolades he expected. During the war years, he worked for the BBC as Chief Overseas Publicity Officer. In 1949, he worked for the British Council as an editor of their series, Writers and Their Work. His last collection of short stories was published in 1955. His final works dealt with non-fiction. His works include The Parents Left Alone and Other Stories (1940), Calling All Nations (1942), British Broadcasting (1946), Collected Stories (1946), Malice Bites Back (1947), Asking For Trouble (1948), A Thorn For the Heart (1952), Goodbye, Aunt Hester (1955), The English Short Story - Two volumes (1964) and The Modest Art: A Survey of the Short Story In English (1968).
