Died: Nov. 10, 2006 - Portales, New Mexico, USA

Williamson spent his early years in Texas until 1915, when the family moved to New Mexico. His early education was minimal, but he enjoyed story-telling and, as a young man, submitted his first story, Metal Man to Amazing Stories in 1928. Thereafter, he contributed short stories to the leading SF magazines. He became friends with Miles Breuer and the two collaborated on some works during the early 1930s. By the 1940s, he had published 12 novels. During the Second World War, he served as a weather forecaster for the US Army Air Corps. Following the war, he worked for The New York Sunday News as a science fiction writer for their comic strip, Beyond Mars, form 1952 to 1955. In the mid-1950s he went to Eastern New Mexico University, where he took a BA in English and an MA. He taught literary criticism and the Modern Novel until his retirement in 1977. In 1964, he was awarded a PhD from the University of Colorado. His work began to decline in the 1980s. In 1976 he was awarded the Grand Master Nebula award. His works include The Cosmic Express (1930), The Green Girl (1931), Golden Blood (1933), Islands of the Sun (1935), Collision orbit (1942), Darker Than You Think (1948), The Humanoids (1949), Dragon's Island (1951), Bright New Universe (1967), The Moon Children (1972), Lifeburst (1984), Mazeway (1990) and The Silicon Dagger (1999).
