Adolf Harnack

a.k.a. Carl Gustav Adolf von Harnack

Died: Jun. 10, 1930 - Heidelberg, Germany

Educated at the University of Dorpat and the University of Leipzig. Harnack took his PhD degree from the latter and began lecturing on Gnosticism and the Apocalypse. He collaborated with Gebhardt and Zahn in publishing an edition of the works of the Apostolic Fathers. In 1879, he became professor ordinares of church history at the University of Glessen. In 1881, he published Das Monchtum, a work on monasticism and became a joint editor of Theologische Literaturzeitung. In 1886, he was at the University of Marburg, and Berlin two years later. He was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences. In 1893, he published a history of Christian literature. In 1905, he became the General Director of the Royal Library at Berlin and continued in that post until 1921. Harnack was one of the most prolific of modern critical scholars. His works include The History of Dogma (1896-99), Christianity and History (1896), Das Wesen des Christentums (1900), The Mission and the Expansion in the First Three Centuries (1904-05), Luke the Physician (1907), The Sayings of Jesus (1908) and The Acts of the Apostles (1909).
