William Hawley Smith

Born: Oct. 7, 1845 - Sunderland, Massacusetts, USA

Died: May 8, 1922 - Peoria, Illinois, USA

Educated at State Normal University in Illinois, Smith graduated in 1870 and began by teaching school. In 1876, he became the County superintendent of schools in McLean County, Illinois. From 1882 to 1887, he worked as a newspaper editor. In 1887, he entered the manufacturing sector. From 1893 to 1910, he was a touring lecturer. His most famous work was The Evolution of "Dodd" which was published to acclaim in 1883, and gained in popularity over the ensuing years, selling over a million copies. Unfortunately, Smith never received any royalties for the work. His other works include Walks and Talks (1894), The New Hamlet (1902), The Promoters: A Novel Without a Woman (1904) and All the Children of All the People (1912).
