Emil Ludwig *

Died: Sep. 17, 1948 - Ascona, Switzerland

Educated in law, Ludwig soon turned to writing. He wrote several plays and novellas whilst working as a journalist. He moved to Switzerland in 1906. Nevertheless, he worked for the Berliner Tageblatt in Vienna and Istanbul during the First World War. Following the war and throughout the 1920s he produced a number of excellent biographies. He was also an active interviewer, speaking with Mussolini, Stalin, Kemal Attaturk and Masaryk, among others. In 1932, he became a Swiss citizen, but at the onset of war in 1940 went to America. He returned to Switzerland following the war. He continued to publish until his death in 1948. His works include Goethe (1920), Napoleon (1926), Bismarck (1927), The Son of Man (1928), Lincoln (1929), Hindenburg (1935), Cleopatra (1937), Beethoven (1943) and The Moral Conquest of Germany (1945).
