Died: Sep. 18, 1964 - Studio City, California, USA

He worked at various jobs in California until he concentrated on a writing career in Hollywood in the late 1920s, and began working for Universal Studios as a reader. He produced his first story in Dime Detective, Murder Alley, in 1935. A prolific contributor to may pulps including Black Mask, Dime Detective and Detective Fiction Weekly. His best known character was Steve Midnight, an LA cab driver cum detective. He then turned to screenplays and produced over 50, many of them westerns. He moved on to TV in the 1950s and wrote for many popular series, including Death Valley Days and 77 Sunset Strip. He broke his back and died from a horseback riding incident in 1964. His many works were Guns for a Lady (1936), The Mirror Maze (1937), The Black Widow (1938), The Man From San Quentin (1939), Brass Knuckles (1940), Death and Taxis (1942), Legend of Boulder Gap (1950), So-long Tombstone (1953) and A Man With a Gun (1955).
