Pierre Louys *

Died: Jun. 6, 1925 - Paris, France

Educated at the Ecole Alsacienne in Paris where he became friends with the noted homosexual, Andre Gide. He began spelling his name as Louys from 1890. In 1891, he co-founded La Conque, a literary review.There he published Astarte, an early collection of erotic verse. He became a disciple of the post Heredia and married his youngest daughter. In 1894, he published Chansons de Bilitis, a literary hoax - said to be translations from Greek of a poetess contemporary with Sappho - which nevertheless was well-received. In 1896, he published his first novel, Aphrodite - Ancient Manners, which became a best seller. He became a Chevalier de la legion d'Honneur in 1909, becoming Officer in 1922. Claude Debussy, a friend of Louys, composed musical adaptations of a number of Louys' poems. His other works include The Woman and the Puppet (1898), The Adventures of King Pausole (1901), Sanguines (1903), Archipelago (1906), Death Watch (1916), Fourteen Images (1925) and many of his works were published posthumously.
