Friedrich Schlegel

a.k.a. Karl Wilhelm Friedrich von Schlegel

Author Code: GKFS

Born: Mar. 10, 1772 - Hanover, Germany

Died: Jan. 12, 1829 - Dresden, Germany

Educated in law at the universities of Gottingen and Leipzig. From 1793, he devoted his time to literary pursuits. Friedrich was the younger brother of August Wilhelm, and together they would found the Athaeneum. In 1796, they hoped to influence Schiller to further their careers, but were unsuccessful. Friedrich moved to Berlin where he became one of the leading characters of the Romantic movement, and contributed to prominent journals. His incomplete novel, Lucinda, published in 1799 caused quite a sensation at the time. His best works were undoubtedly his critical writings and his aphorisms. Although an atheist in his youth, he later became a Catholic. He was knighted in 1814. His works include Uber die Diotina (1795), Uber Lessing (1797), Ideen (1800), Alarkos (1802), Reise nach Frankreich (1803) and Uber die Sprach und Weisheit du Indier (1808)
