Steele Rudd *

a.k.a. Arthur Hoey Davis

Author Code: OSRU

Born: Nov. 14, 1868 - Drayton, Australia

Died: Oct. 11, 1935 - Brisbane, Australia

Davis' family was large, consisting of 13 children, and Davis was educated at a local school. He left school when he was around eleven and did odd jobs. When he was 15, he became a junior stockrider and at 18, he became a junior clerk in the office of the curator of intestate estates, located in Brisbane. When he was 21, he moved to the sheriff's office, and it was at this time that he began to write. He was promoted to under-sheriff in 1902. He first adopted the pseudonym of Steele Rudder, which was later shortened to Steele Rudd. He contributed rowing articles to the Brisbane Chronicle. His articles were very popular and the Bulletin collected them into On Our Selection (1899), with such success that a second volume, Our New Selection appeared four years later. He retired from public service in 1903 and, the following year, founded Steele Rudd's Magazine. Over the ensuing years, Rudd published numerous short stories, novels and plays in both his own and other journals and became one of Australia's best loved humourists. Some of his works were also made into films. His works include Back At Our Selection (1906), In Australia (1908), Dad in Politics and Other Stories (1908), The Book of Dan (1911), Grandpa's Selection (1916), On Emu Creek (1922), The Rudd Family 1926) and The Green Grey Homestead (1934).
