Marie Connor Leighton

Died: Jan. 28, 1941 - Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England

Sent to France when she was ten, Marie was educated at Marquise and at Tunbridge Wells. She began to write at an early age. She fell in love with the actor/author Wilson Barrett and toured the stage with him when she was only fifteen. She returned to writing and published her first book, Beauty's Queen, in 1884. In 1889, she married Robert Leighton, a magazine editor and fellow author. They would have three children; one of which, Roland, would die in the First World War and be the subject of a biography by Marie. Many of her works became best-sellers at the time. These works include Two Black Pearls (1886), Husband and Wife (1888), The Heart's Awakening (1893), Convict 99 (1898), The Amazing Verdict (1904), Builder of Ships (1911), The Silver Stair (1914), Boy of My Heart (1916), The Opal Heart (1920), For Love or Money (1922), The Torry Diamonds Mystery (1930), The Money Spider (1936) and In the Plotter's Web (1937).
