Margaret Mead

Born: Dec. 16 1901 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

Died: Nov. 15, 1978 - New York City, New York, USA

Educated at Barnard College in New York City where she received her bachelor's degree, Mead then studied at Columbia University where she received her Master's and PhD degrees. Mead did not support the racially biased theories of the time. She relocated to Samoa in 1926 to study the ethnology of the area. In 1928, she published Coming of Age in Samoa which became a best-seller, She became one of the most respected anthropologists of the time. For years, she worked for the American Museum of Natural History until her retirement in 1969, which included her time as assistant curator from 1926 to 1942, associate curator from 1942 to 1964 and, finally, Curator of Ethnology from 1964 to 1969. In 1973 she was elected President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mead died from pancreatic cancer when she was 76. Her other works include Growing Up In New Guinea (1930), Sex and Temperment in Three Primitive Societies (1935), Balinese Character (1942), Male and Female (1949), Continuities in Cultural Evolution (1964), Anthropology: A Human Science (1964), Culture and Committment (1970), A Rap On Race (1971), Blackberry Winter (1972) and Ruth Benedict (1974).
