Born: Aug. 10, 1894 - Potava, Ukraine

Died: Jul. 22, 1958 - Saint Petersburg, Russia

Educated at Saint Petersburg University in law, Zoschenko didn't graduate because of financial difficulties He served in the Army in the First World War and was highly decorated. Following the Revolution, Zoschenko served for several months in the Red Army during the Civil War in 1919. He was subsequently discharged for health reasons. He achieved popularity during the 1920s as a satirist and short story writer. During the Zhdanov decree of 1946, Zoschenko was denounced and was forced to live in poverty. He received his state pension only shortly before his death. His works include The Tales of Nazar Ilych, Mr. Bluebelly (1922), Sentimental Tales (1923-36), Youth Restored (1933), The Story of One Life (1935), The Sky-Blue Book (1935), Before Sunrise (1943), Soldier's Luck (1943), The Canvas Briefcase (1945), The Adventures of a Monkey (1946) and Nervous People and Other Satires (1962 Posthumous).
