Marshall Monroe Kirkman

Born: Jul. 10, 1842 - Morgan County, Illinois, USA

Died: Apr. 17, 1921 - Evanston, Illinois, USA

Kirkman was educated at home. In 1856, he went to Fulton, Illinois and joined the service of the Chicago and North Western Railway as a telegraph operator. Later, he was transferred to DeKalb, Illinois where he was the supervisor. In 1861. he became the Auditor Freight Accounts and, subsequently in 1865, Assistant General Accountant. He continued to move up in the organisation until, in 1889, he became vice-president. He retired in 1910. Kirkman was an expert on railways and wrote a number of highly acclaimed volumes on the subject. He also wrote some historical novels. His works include The Baggage, Parcel and Mail Traffic of Railroads (1881), Origin and Evolution of Transportation (1898), The Romance of Gilbert Holmes (1900), Iskander (1903), The Science of Railways (12 Vols. 1903-04), The Alexandrian Novels (3 Vols. 1909), History of Alexander the Great (1913) and The King: A Romance of the Camp and Court of Alexander the Great (1913).
