a.k.a. General Thomas James

Author Code: AGTJ

Born: (?) 1782 - (?) Maryland, USA

Died: Dec. 1, 1847 - Monroe City, Illinois, USA

James travelled with his family through Kentucky and Illinois, and finally settled in Missouri in 1897. Lewis and Clark brought the Mandan chief, Shehaka, back with them at the culmination of their expedition, with the purpose of a visit to the President in Washington. Later, Lewis, as governor of Missouri, contracted James to return Shehaka up the Missouri River to his people. James then led 350 men and returned Shehaka safely. He then purchased Kinney's Mill in Illinois and spent some years in milling. In 1825, he became a general in the Illinois militia and also served in the Illinois legislature from 1826 to 1828. In 1827, he was appointed postmaster of James' Mill. James also took part in the Blackhawk Wars during 1832. In 1846, the year before his death, he published Three Years Among the Indians and Mexicans, his only work. He died the following year in Monroe City, Illinois.
