George Gabriel Stokes

Author Code: IGGS

Born: Aug. 13, 1819 - Skreen County Sligo, Ireland

Died: Feb. 1, 1903 - Cambridge, England

Educated in Dublin and thereafter Bristol College where he studied physics. He was greatly influenced in mathematics by Francis Newman. Stokes matriculated at Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1837. He remained in Cambridge until his death. At Pembroke, Stokes was influenced by the theological works of William Paley. He graduated top in his class and became a fellow of Pembroke. In 1849, he became the Lucasian Professor, which had previously been held by Isaac Newton, until his death in 1903. In order to supplement his income, he taught natural science and physics at the Government School of Mines in London. Stokes wrote various papers on mathematics and physics, but was equally prolific in theological matters. He was responsible for creating the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1880s. His main areas of interest lay in light and optics, although he was by no means limited to those areas. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and, from 1889, Baronet Stokes of Lensfield Cottage. His major publications include Mathematical and Physical Papers (1880-1905, 5 Vols.), On Light (1887), Natural Theology (1891,1893, 2 vols.), The Perception of Light (1895) and Memoir and Scientific Correspondence of the Late Sir George Gabriel Stokes (1907 Posthumous).
