Peter Cheyney *

a.k.a. Reginald Evelyn Peter Southouse

Died: Jun. 26, 1951 - London, England

Educated at the Mercer's School in London, Cheyney en;listed in the British Army at the beginning of the First World War. He was wounded in 1916 and left the military in 1917. During the war, he published two volumes of poetry. During the 1920s and early 1930s he was a police reporter for the Metropolitan Police. His first novel, This Man is Dangerous, appeared in 1936 and sold well. He left the force and became a full-time writer. In 1938, he published The Urgent Hangman, which was highly successful. During the Second World War, Cheyney created his 'Dark' series which dealt with espionage. He also produced a volume of short stories and some poetry. He was a gifted pistol-shot, golfer and a fencer of repute. His other works include Poems of Love and War (1916), To Corona and Other Poems (1916), Poison Ivy (1937), Dangerous Curves (1939), Dark Duet (1942), Dark Hero (1946), Dance Without Music (1947) and Ladies Won't Wait (1951).
